On July 16, 2014 at 2:15 p.m. a motorist struck a pedestrian on Middletown Avenue near Cloudland Road. North Haven Police Officers responded and found a 21-year-old male unconscious in the roadway. The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries, and has been transported to an area hospital The operator of the pick-up truck that struck the pedestrian has been identified as 72-year-old Theodore Spalding from North Haven. Spalding was traveling south on Middletown Avenue when he collided with the young man who was jogging north on the side of the road. The initial investigation led officers to suspect Spalding was intoxicated. Field sobriety tests were performed and Spalding was taken into custody. He was arrested on sight and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence, and Assault Second Degree With a Motor Vehicle. Spalding is being held on a $100,000 bond and will be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court tomorrow, July 17, 2014. The young man who was struck by Spalding’s vehicle is currently listed as critical condition. His identity is not being released until police confirm his entire family has been notified.
